New CompTIA Security+ Certification Takes on Latest Cybersecurity Skills, Techniques and Trends

The new version of CompTIA Security + (SY0-501) launched this month places greater emphasis on the practical and practical ability of a security professional to identify and address security threats, attacks and vulnerabilities.

"The key to security today is the intelligent management of resources and the ability to pivot resources," said Dr. James Stanger, evangelization technology chief at CompTIA. "Risk management makes it possible, CompTIA Security + makes it possible for security professionals to use the same vocabulary and customize the framework and move forward with confidence."

CompTIA Security + is a neutral credential in the provider, internationally recognized, used by private and public employers, government agencies and others to validate basic and intermediate level cybersecurity skills. Now, in its fifth version, CompTIA Security + was introduced in 2002. Since then, more than 430,000 people have obtained the credential.

One of the factors that differentiates CompTIA Security + from other cybersecurity credentials is the use of performance-based test questions. On average, an examinee can expect to spend up to a third of the 90-minute exam by completing the performance-based items.

"These elements include simulations of technology solutions and story-based articles that require advanced cognitive thinking on the part of the examinee," Stanger explained. "Cybersecurity professionals who surpass CompTIA Security + have shown that not only can they identify cyber threats, but they know how to respond to stop them quickly, efficiently and effectively."

CompTIA Security + is relevant to a wide range of technology positions, including system administrators, network administrators, security administrators and penetration testers / IT audits.

While a prerequisite is not required to take the exam, candidates must be certified by CompTIA Network + or have equivalent experience; a minimum of two years in IT administration with a focus on security and everyday safety experience. The exam requires extensive knowledge of security concerns and implementation, which includes:

  •     Identify risk and participate in risk mitigation activities.
  •     Provide infrastructure, application, information and operational security.
  •     Application of security controls to maintain confidentiality, integrity and availability.
  •     Identify appropriate technologies and products and solve security incidents and events.
  •     Operating with knowledge of applicable government policies, laws and regulations.

CompTIA Security + is accredited by ANSI and complies with ISO / IEC 17024 for personnel certification programs. The certification is also approved by the US Department of Defense. UU For Directive 8140 / 8570.01-M, which established department policies for its workforce in cyberspace, including training and certification requirements.
